In our fast-paced world, technological advancements continue to shape how we connect and engage with our surroundings. Recently, the influence of social media platforms has sparked significant discourse regarding its impact on mental health (Robinson & Smith, 2024). Social media refers to platforms that are primarily used to create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks on various platforms. These platforms include but are not limited to: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc. The rise of social media has led to significant changes in our society, specifically digital media. However, statistics show that due to the rise of social media, the impact on mental health has been consequential. Similarly, we are under the constant scrutiny of large companies regarding our personal data and digital footprint. This research presentation seeks to delve into the complex relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes. This study will draw upon secondary research conducted through public databases such as NIH to explore various aspects of social media including media consumption, and interaction patterns. One study that this presentation will look at is the study conducted by MIT that looks at the trends in the decline of mental health due to social media consumption (Walsh, 2022). It will also look at the review of various studies conducted that analyze how social media usage has a connection to mental health (Karim, 2020). This presentation will also look at how the mental health of adolescence is impacted through literature reviews (Khalaf et al., 2023). Moreover, it explores how the algorithm of such platforms influences the relationship between social media and mental health, such as age, gender, and personality traits. Through an in depth analysis, this research presentation seeks to highlight the ramifications of the digital world on mental health, while also touching on the ethical considerations regarding social media.
